Colossians 1:15-20

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, for all things in heaven and on earth were created by him – all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or powers – all things were created through him and for him. He himself is before all things and all things are held together in him. He is the head of the body, the church, as well as the beginning, the firstborn from among the dead, so that he himself may become first in all things. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in the Son and through him to reconcile
all things to himself by making peace through the blood of his cross – through him, whether things on earth or things in heaven.
Colossians 1:15-20

About Paul
Paul thought Jesus was the WORST of all time.

He hated Jesus. He went on a mission to Destroy all christians, imprisoning and killing them, ultimately he wanted to dethrone
Jesus and disband all of his followers. Paul swung hard from one end of the pendulum to the other.

Because he had a unique encounter with the person of Jesus that radically transformed his life and rerouted his mission.
Instead of his “behead the christians” tour Paul is now on a missionary journey around half the known world, proclaiming Jesus is the GREATEST This message landed Paul in prison. Constituents from his previous life now stood guard at his jail cell, where Paul wrote
over half the new testament and distributed it to the churches he had planted.
One of those churches was the church at Colossae.

More On Colossians
Some false thinking, false teaching, and corrupt people within the church (not without) were pushing ideas and ideologies that reduced Jesus to just “one of many” angelic emanations from God.

Jesus was in a place of prominence, but not a place of preeminence. -H.B. Charles Jr
They were teaching that Jesus was a GOOD man, but not the GOD man.
False Teachers teaching that Jesus was “one of the greats”  but Paul says no, He is THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

1. Jesus Is The IMAGE of God
“He is the image of the invisible God,”
John 4:24 Jesus says “God is spirit”
John 1:18 – “no man has ever seen God”

God makes himself known through JESUS.
John 14:9 – Jesus says “If you’ve seen me you’ve seen the
He’s the IMAGE of God.
We are created in the image of God.
When you look at creation you see glimpses of God’s beauty, his artwork, But Jesus is the only person or thing that FULLY, WHOLLY
reflects God..

I woke up, and I looked in the mirror, and the mirror reflected my image accurately. Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Jesus is like a mirror, reflecting the character of the Father.
His love is the Father’s love,
His truth is the Father’s truth,
His forgiveness is the Father’s forgiveness.

That’s why Jesus said, “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the

If you are looking for God, searching, seeking, questioning,

2. Jesus is the FIRSTBORN of Creation
“the firstborn over all creation”
This is not a statement about birth order, it’s a statement about FIRST-NESS. PREEMINENCE.
It’s an indication of RANK.
I met a guy the other day who is the base commander of Semour Johnson AFB
HE’s in charge of…the WHOLE BASE
He’s got over 900 hours of combat time in an F15
He’s earned his place…
His next stop in his career is probably the pentagon
In the military, there are different “ranks” of authority
“Firstborn” here is a designation of first rank, with that comes inheritance, rights, legal authority, a position of prominence and
preeminence, that’s what it’s referring to….

JESUS ranks FIRST of ALL THINGS, in the whole world, in the history of the world.
For you and me, Jesus first in our relationships, Jesus first in our identity, Jesus first in our family, Jesus first with our finances,
Jesus first with our business nothing is right until Jesus is in first position!!!

3. Jesus is the CREATOR of ALL
“all things in heaven and on earth were created by him”
Someone asks, “Where did creation come from?” I’ve heard people say, “From nothing.” I have not seen nothing create
something.  Atheists believe that everything we see sort of just happened by

This year I have the privilege of officiating a wedding ceremony for a watch maker from NYC. He’s made and repaired custom
watches for celebrities all around the globe. Watches with eloquent designs and intricate parts and pieces. Stuff that blows
my Fitbit out of the water. I would never look at one of his watches and say, “wow, what an
When we look at the world, we see such a beautiful design it’s immature and unscientific to assume it was all by accident.

This includes you and me.
You do not live an independent autonomous life, you come from God, you will return to God, you will give an account to God, you
belong to God, anything other than that is an illusion. You were created by Him, you were created for Him, and you
were created to be in relationship with Him, and you will give an
account to Him.

4. Jesus is the SUSTAINER of all
“all things and all things are held together in him”
WATCHMAKER: Back to the story of the watchmaker – a
watchmaker makes the watch, but then sort of lets it go and it
works on its own.
Thats NOT how Jesus works.
He is both intimately involved in creation,
AND he is intimately involved in sustaining his creation!
A good dad?
A good DAD isn’t one who just has babies and abandons his kids.
That’s not a dad, that’s a sperm donor
In addition to that, a good dad isn’t one who has kids and abuses them, or rides them hard, or constantly yells and berates them, or
controls them every step of the way. That’s a terrible dad. A good DAD is one who is constantly managing the tension of
teaching, learning, leading, loving, caring, intimately involved with his children both when the succeed and when they fail.

Jesus doesn’t just create, he sustains.
If Your Life IS Falling Apart…
If your life is falling apart, give it to Jesus, He holds it together.
Give your marriage to Jesus.
Give Your family to Jesus
Give your life to Jesus
What are you not trusting Him with? Who are you not trusting him
with? He holds things together.

5. Jesus is the HEAD of the Church
“He is the head of the body, the church”
A body without a head, is dead!
A body with more than one head, is a monster!
The Church is like body,
Jesus is the head,
We are all different parts. Each of us has our own special gifting and responsibility.
As the book progresses, we will learn more about ourselves and our part, but the opening chapter wants to get one thing straight…
JESUS is the head.

6. Jesus is ALIVE
“the firstborn from among the dead”
Everyone of you.

You’re going to die.
It’s just true.
Jesus is the only man who ever died and resurrected.
We see some resuscitations in the Bible, but only one resurrection.
Unlike Mohammed, Buddha, Confuscious…
You cannot find Jesus’ burial site.
He’s not there.

7. Jesus is FULLY GOD
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in the Son
Fully Man, Fully God

8. Jesus is RECONCILER
and through him to reconcile all things to himself by

9. Jesus is the ONLY SAVIOR
making peace through the blood of his cross – through him,
whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Jesus is the greatest of all time
Have you surrendered fully to the person of Jesus as Lord and
