“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

When you think of being “financially poor,” what comes to mind? I think of being Broke, needy, empty, nothing to give, humble, hungry, appreciative, & in need of mercy from others.

In the same way, the “Poor in spirit” is a kind of spiritual poverty, an emptiness that can only be filled by God. It’s recognizing the inability to provide for oneself; understanding that I have nothing to give. It’s a spiritual hungering , the kind of hunger that leads us to beg. It’s a spiritual posture of humility. It’s humility & gratitude rooted in an awareness of our need for mercy. When we recognize that need, we will seek it and we will find our “riches” in the Kingdom of heaven.
