Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.””
John 20:21 NIV
Peace is not a selfish retreat from the troubles & problems in the world. It’s the opposite. Peace is a calling. It reassures, prepares & SENDS us into a world full of problems & trouble. In other words, peace is a person. Jesus tells us to find our peace in him — a peace rooted in his resurrection, His purposes, His mission.
In my opinion, there are three stages of peace.
1. Peace WITH God – the nature of our heart is to stray & rebel against God. We are at war with Him because of our own sin & our own desire to be like God, rivaling against him for the throne in our lives. Jesus came to settle the score once and for all, and to give us a pathway to peace with God. By confessing our sin & believing in our heart, we can have a peaceful relationship WITH God again.
2. Peace OF God – because we have peace with God, we can now rest in the peace OF God. No circumstance or situation, no suffering, no pain, no confusion or disillusionment can steal the peace OF God in our lives. We cannot have peace OF God apart from peace with God.
3. Peace with OTHERS – Now we are called not just to claim Gods peace for ourselves, but to be an extension of Gods peace to others. Just as He took initiative & paved a way for peace with us, now we are called to pave the way for peace with others. We are not just consumers of Gods peace, now we are peace makers. This is our calling. We are sent into the world with peace in our hearts, on our lips, & in our hands.
